Bits are components used for Tinkering. Bits can be denoted by either colored dots or by letters and numbers. On the wiki, letters and numbers will be used. The wiki uses <0> for ease of use, 0 bits on game start, will be a random choice between <A>, <B>, <C>, and <D> bits. Also, during world generation, there is small chance for each of tinkering recipes to replace one or more of their advanced bits with two bits of previous tiers. These "altered" recipes remain the same for the entire game.

Bits can be acquired by disassembling an item that is able to be disassembled using the relevant skill; the most obvious such source is Scrap, which is useless on their own. Alphabet bits are very common and are used for base material, while numbered bits are rare - generally, the higher the number, the rarer.

Sources

General Sources

  • Scrap can be found lying around on the ground, by scavenging, or in the inventory of legendary Barathrumites or tinkers
  • Inside various containers or looted from killed creatures.
  • Destroyed & Dismembered mechanical creatures, such as turrets and robots, might also leave some random scrap behind, in the same manner as other creatures leave corpses.
  • Traders dealing with technical items, such as Argyve in Joppa, usually have a selection of scrap for sale, as well.
  • Most bits are obtained by disassembling pieces of scrap or various technological artifacts
    • Note that when disassembling something, you are guaranteed to always receive its most valuable bit(the rightmost one); you then have a 50% chance of getting each remaining bit; the percentage chance for additional bits can be improved with either a Basic toolkit or an Advanced toolkit (their bonuses do not stack).

Reliable Sources for Specific Bits

Because on occasion items will have their most valuable bit changes to two of a lower bit, another method of getting a bit can include disassembling that item that usually has a higher bit.

For a full query of every item of that bit, use the link in the table or visit /Items by bits.

<A><B><C><D> These bits are from an source that gives <0>, but what kind the will depend on the run. The most common source of these are scrap and mk I and mk II grenades. Most items contain a 0 bit at the very least, so there is usually a 50% chance of obtaining a 0 bit when disassembling something.

Can also be farmed by defusing and disassembling mines laid by Miner Mk I bots and its higher-level equivalents.

Another farming method is to kill boosterbots, which drop a large number empty injectors that will disassemble into two 0 bits.

<1> Gained by deconstructing Chem Cells, which are often dropped by defeated robots. One spot with low level robots that drop chem cells is lower Grit Gate, without the droid scrambler to also gain experience. All nonrare tonics also require one. The stun rods they drop also disassemble into a 1 bit.

More advanced grenades also have it. If lucky, you can encounter a Miner Mk I or above whose mines contain this bit.

<2> Extracted from muskets, Desert rifle(favilink error!), and similar guns. Desert rifles are always carried by goatfolk yurtwardens in the jungles and Issachari riflers in the deserts in the salt dunes. /Items by bits#2
<3> Extracted from recoilers, pump shotguns and semi-automatic pistols. Mafeo will always sell Grit Gate recoilers that can be used as a source for this.

Semi-automatic pistols can be obtained in unlimited quantity by disarming the microturrets created by a spring-turret grenades, effectively allowing the <2> bits used to make such grenades to be upgraded to <3> bits.

/Items by bits#3
<4> Extracted from high-level guns, such as a carbine or a chaingun, but these tend to be expensive.

One way to get them is to disarm chaingun turrets (They will only drop them if disarmed, not if killed.)

/Items by bits#4
<5> Extracted from sphynx salt injectors and ubernostrum injectors, which are often sold by Mafeo and similar merchants. Weapons like nullray pistols or vibro blades that may be useless for the current character can also be disassembled.

Much rarer than 6 bits, contrary to its order.

/Items by bits#5
<6> Extracted from Templar phylacteries and nuclear cells. /Items by bits#6
<7> Can be reliably salvaged from leering stalkers, specifically its head and weapon, if it can be killed.

One guaranteed <7> AI Microcontroller from the small sphere of negative weight can be found in the Waterlogged Tunnel under Joppa. 7 bits can also be disassembled from several high tier ranged weapons.

<8> Lower levels of caves often spawn Dynamic Turret Tinkers and phase cannon tinkers, which place phase cannon turrets that can be disarmed for the weapon and often also spawn with antimatter cells. /Items by bits#8
