The Most Powerful Mutation

Even if the limits on targeted creature levels were implemented, Metamorphosis is still the most ridiculous utility mutation, especially because the user adopts the faction of the target, and all for the sake of people turning themselves into Snapjaws for the meme.

  • I can level up once giving Argyve stolen artifacts, invest one Mutation Point into Metamorphosis, and turn myself into Tam. I'll have Tam's physical Attributes and HP, which are inflated due to being a merchant, and get better deals from Dromad Merchants. There is little need to stop being Tam until I start being threatened by thermal-element attacks.
  • I can turn myself into a robot to enable Wander Mode at any time, since few factions are aggressive towards the Robots faction.
  • I can perform the Water Ritual with whoever I want by transforming into any of the fellows outside of their lair, or into them!
  • Forget using 3D cobblers in Call to Arms prep, if I find a burrowing girshling who's a hired guard, I can transform into it, recoil back to Grit Gate, and build a labyrinth for the Templars to blow themselves up inside. Probably put Shem -1 in their own little tomb while I'm at it.
  • Turn myself into a Chitinous Puma in the jungle outside the Rainbow Wood and be completely safe once I'm inside, as soupy sludges won't attack me while I'm tripping on my way to meet the Funny Fungus, who will speak to me because Fungi are neutral to Cats.

This is only the surface. It's pretty obvious why Metamorphosis is pre-release content, and I wonder how it'll be balanced if/when it sees a full release. Some ideas are to make the transformation have a limited timeframe, limit the player's dialogue if their transformed form is a non-talking animal, change the faction swap to instead work like a disguise, or average the metamorphed creature's physical Attributes between their own and their target's. Or just tweak the level scaling until it's slightly less broken. Maybe the metamorpher having to unequip and then reequip all of their gear before taking even one action after ending metamorphosis is an intentional act of balancing and not some oversight, I don't know. I don't expect them to rebalance how reputation works. Felis77 (talk) 23:36, 4 February 2024 (UTC)felis77
