The emerald tongs used to retrieve the casts atomized and vented vanadium -- the green glint -- into the manifold, imperfecting the metal and conferring its characteristic hue. Casts mottled with dust particles were culled and fed to lithovores, leaving only the perfect hexagonal prisms.
