A name can take on the appearance of its surroundings. For example, it might look like a wall when encountered.
A name could be called a more advanced version of Horned Chameleon. While latter changes only its color, mimics can imitate theirs surroundings fully.

Mimics usually encountered alone and remain completely stationary until their prey comes to its melee range or attacks it first. Undisturbed mimics have an unique sprite (page picture) and therefore easy recognisable, but, if it already had a skirmish with someone before you saw it, it may have a diffetent sprite (most nasty case would probably be a mimic imitating a wall).

While in combat mode mimic has a chance to shift its image in form of one of its surrounding tiles every turn. Mimics chase their prey and attack in melee. They are capable of grabbing their prey (like Jilted lovers) making it Stuck.

Because mimics are passive until provoked and (more often than not) easily distinguishable, they can be simply left alone if your character is not up to the challenge of defeating it.

Mimics generally do not engage or attack targets unless the target comes into melee range, so an effective avoidance strategy is simply to avoid approaching it.
