air current microsensor is a lower cost cybernetic which reveals the locations of staircases and other up/down map transitions, without giving actual vision of the tiles they are on. This sight is akin to having previously explored the tile but it not being within the user's current vision--with a couple exceptions noted below.
It is available during character creation to True Kin from the Crustal Mortars of Yawningmoon (those of the Child of the Hearth, Child of the Wheel, Child of the Deep, and Fuming God-Child castes).
Revealed transitions include: stairs up,
stairs down,
deep shafts, and open-air pits such as those found at the bottom of
Golgotha.
Revealed transitions are considered explored, but not visible, meaning that certain abilities such as Jump which are dependent upon the target tile being visible will not function if a revealed (but not visible) transition is selected as its target.
This restriction does not apply to all movement ablities. Valid targets for the high-fidelity matter recompositer are based merely on whether or not the user has explored the tile, meaning that it's possible for the user to instantly teleport to transitions revealed by the air current microsensor.
This, however, does not extend to the random-location teleport of matter recompositer. With the exception of deep shafts, transitions revealed by air current microsensor are not considered valid destinations for the matter recompositer's emergency transit ability unless the user has previously explored the tile with their eyes.
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
- Can make navigating certain locations with guaranteed up/down transitions such as the Rust Wells or Bethesda Susa much faster.
- Can assist in quickly finding staircases up when lost underground without a recoiler.
- Makes it somewhat easier to manually descend strata.
- Its low cost (2) in license tier points allows for easy installation without much impact on the user's ability to install additional implants.
Disadvantages
- Very difficult to find outside of character creation.
- Can be replaced by the more functional optical multiscanner
- Up/down transitions aren't the most common outside of locations with a static layout.
Tips
- Can be used with high-fidelity matter recompositer, allowing the user to rapidly descend up to 25 strata in the ruins and baroque ruins.
- Generally makes the navigation of certain exceptionally dangerous locations such as high tier historical sites (which are often overflowing with deadly hostile creatures like star krakens and chrome pyramids) much faster. In combination with a high-fidelity matter recompositer, these areas can become functionally skippable.
