Shattering Blows is a hidden Cudgel skill that is not available to the player.
The only creatures who have this skill are great magma crabs and
rustaceans.
Mechanics
Shattering Blows grants the attacker a 10% chance to inflict one of the following effects with each cudgel attack:[1]
- If the target is the player, a longer-duration version of the cracked effect on one random piece of the player's equipment.
- If the target is not the player, or if the player has AV greater than 0, a longer-duration version of the cleaved effect.
- The player typically only has AV greater than 0 if they have intrinsic AV, such as AV granted from the
Calloused skill.
- The player typically only has AV greater than 0 if they have intrinsic AV, such as AV granted from the
Both effects last for 2000 turns[2], which is longer than a full day in game. Both effects can also stack, leading either to cracked pieces of equipment with a greater than -1 AV penalty, and/or to a cleaved effect on the player/creature with a greater than -1 AV penalty.
In extreme cases, such as a historic site filled with rustaceans, it is completely plausible for a player to get reduced to 0 AV for a long period of time due to this effect. For example, a player with the
Calloused skill might have all of their equipment cracked down to 0 AV, as well as a -3 or -4 penalty from a cleaved effect directly applied to themselves.
