spiral borer
What sort of giant manthing carried a forty-stone chrome satchel on their shoulder? The answer is not known. But a clue is stenciled on the side of the satchel: a drill pointing downward into a well.
On use, the spiral borer will create a staircase going 20 strata deep. This is, however, a one time use and will consume the item. This is normally the only way to create stairs down or stairs up (however, see Burrowing Claws).
Areas that were not generated prior to a spiral borer digging through them will treat the new stairs as a guideline for room and cave generation. For this reason, the new stairs will typically connect to the rest of the caves without the need for other digging tools.
Tips
This section is opinion-based. Your mileage may vary.
- Use a spiral borer to quickly descend into the underground or through procedural dungeons like Grit Gate and the Asphalt Mines. This makes accessing high-tier underground zones much easier.
- Because it places stairs up adjacent to stairs down the borer's spiral tunnel allows the player to scout many zones and easily escape any hostiles they see. This can be a quick way to meet legendary creatures and snatch items of loot.
