Guide to Followers

This is a guide for companions/followers and how they behave.

Benefits of companions

  • someone other than you is dealing damage and taking it
  • near end game, npcs will have absurd stats that the player will probably not achieve during a normal playthrough
  • for builds with mental mutations, it is not affected by normality (unless your follower themself is normality bending) and can be a good way to get around sources of normality
  • can hold stuff for you

Cons of companions

  • Suffer from not the best AI
  • do not have self preservation in mind unless if they already have it
  • need some micro managing
  • if they have any ranged weapon they will shoot you in the back
  • if they hold stuff and die in an acid pool or die by fire, your stuff is gone.
  • loses some strength if you have no source of domination
  • if you accidentally attack a wall they'll attack that wall forever and its annoying

Methods of gaining followers

(TODO: copy paste all formulas for quick reference) First of fall, how do we get companions? Companions can be gained by:

Note that all of these methods except water ritual are treated as a sort of "slot": only one creature may be your follower through that method. For example, if you beguile a beetlebum when you already had a beguiled snapwjaw, the snapjaw will no longer be your follower (and will probably be hostile!)

Gritty details

Followers of followers

If you somehow gain a creature as a follower that also has followers, the follower's followers will attempt to follow you around, but it is buggy and are prone to suddenly disappearing on zone transitions and such. Do not grow fond of them.

Followers and following

followers will generally follow you to another screen except in certain cicumstances:

  • they are immobilized by any reason (overencumbered, asleep, frozen, stuck, etc)
  • they are sucked into a space time vortex. they'll be impossible to find unless you jump in with them before the vortex closes. You can also give them an ontological anchor to close the vortex without them warping.

Starter builds

Special build: Egokin

Standard follower progression

If you have a build that starts with proselytize, its good to start on targets that are already neutral to you so you can attempt multiple times.

  • at start try getting a watervine farmer- very tanky and start with an iron vine reaper, pretty decent
  • other possible creatures: beetlebums (annoying to take care of though)
  • all legendary creatures (usually snapjaws early on)
  • ???
  • salt kraken (surprisingly easy)

smth smth. have a progression for true kin's rebuke
