A gentling mask is facewear that is most often found being worn by the 'domesticated' followers of a newfather. Like some other gear, it cannot be removed once equipped. Because it is significantly easier for most creatures to survive without a face than without a head, severing the attached body part (e.g. with Amputate Limb) is a much more feasible strategy for removal than with a gentling cone. Alternatively, filling a spray bottle with acid or lava and spraying the gentling mask also works.
