Bits are components used for Tinkering. Bits can be denoted by either colored dots or by letters and numbers. On the wiki, letters and numbers will be used. If a bit is <0>, that means on game start, it will be a random choice between <A>, <B>, <C>, and <D> bits. Also, during world generation, there is small chance for each of tinkering recipes to replace its one or more advanced bits with two of previous tier bits. These "altered" recipes remain like that for entire game.

Bits can be acquired by disassembling an item that is able to be disassembled using the relevant skill; the most obvious such source is Scrap, which is useless on their own. Alphabet bits are very common and are used for base material, while numbered bits are rare - the higher the number, the rarerer.

Bits Names
A Scrap Power Systems
B Scrap Crystals
C Scrap Metal
D Scrap Electronics

Sources

General Sources

  • Scrap & Bits can be found lying around on the ground
  • Inside various containers or looted from killed creatures.
  • Destroyed & Dismembered mechanical creatures, such as turrets and robots, might also leave some random scrap behind, in the same manner as other creatures leave corpses.
  • Traders dealing with technical items, such as Argyve in Joppa, usually have a selection of scrap for sale, as well.
  • Most bits are obtained by disassembling pieces of scrap or various technological artifacts
    • Note that when disassembling something, you are guaranteed to always receive its most valuable bit; you then have a 50% chance of getting each remaining bit.

Specific Bits

Bits Sources
ABCD Various Scrap, Can be purchased in large amounts from any tinker, such as Argyve

Also can be farmed by defusing and disassembling mines laid by Miner Mk I bots and its higher-level equivalents.

1 Gained by deconstructing Chem Cells, which are often dropped by defeated robots. In a pinch, Mafeo in Grit Gate will always have a Grit Gate Recoiler for sale with an energy cell in it, which should have this bit

Tonics also tend to have lots of these

More advanced grenades also have it. If lucky, you can encounter a miner bot whose "droppings" are based on these

2 Extracted from Muskets and Desert Rifles and similar guns have them as well, and are always carried by Goatfolk Yurtwarden in the east and members of the Issachari tribe in the deserts in the west.
3 Extracted from recoilers, Pump Shotguns and Semi-automatic Pistols. Mafeo will always sell Grit Gate Recoilers that can be used as a source for this.

Semi-automatic pistols can be obtained in unlimited quantity by disarming the microturrets created by a spring-turret grenades, effectively allowing the type 2 bits used to make such grenades to be upgraded to type 3 bits.

4 Extracted from high-level guns, such as a Carbine or a Chaingun, but these tend to be expensive

One way to get them is to disarm Chaingun Turrets (They will only drop them if disarmed, not if killed.)

5 Extracted from Sphinx Salt Injectors, which are often sold by Mafeo and similar merchants.

Much rarer than Photonics contrary to its order

6 Extracted from the furniture in Bethesda Susa, especially the Regeneration Tank
7 Can be reliably salvaged from Leering Stalker, specifically its head and weapon

You can get a single guaranteed AI Microcontroller (7) from the Small Sphere of Negative Weight found in the Waterlogged Tunnel under Joppa, if you're willing to deconstruct it.

8 Lower levels of caves often spawn Dynamic Turret Tinkers and Phase Cannon Tinkers, which place Phase Cannon turrets that can be disarmed for the weapon and often also spawn with Antimatter Cells.

Scrap

Scrap are items that generally have one or two guaranteed type of bits. There is regular scrap, and medical scrap. Medical scrap is much rarer. Scrap can be obtained as random loot, by using Scavenger to rifle through piles of trash, or by having said skill and killing robots.
