Mafeo is a member of the Barathrumites and an inhabitant of Grit Gate.[1] He serves as the enclave's general merchant.
Character
Mafeo is a merchant who "sell[s] whatever sundries that meet [his] standards of quality, with some measure of curation". He tries to ensure his shelves "carry a bit of many things", and also offers to identify and repair items for the player in exchange "for a few drams". He is known for wearing bells on his quills, which are meant to attract "prospective customers".
Mafeo also enjoys traveling, and implies he has visited Golgotha,
Bethesda Susa, and
Omonporch. He also claims to have flown over the
Rainbow Wood using a
gyrocopter backpack. Despite his adventerous nature, he claims that "there's nowhere like Grit Gate in the whole of Qud", and always returns there eventually.
Hortensa claims to enjoy reading storybooks after supper. She says that many of the books contain places with bells, which always remind her of Mafeo: "More than anyone else, Mafeo could be a character in the bright world of a story, where this dusty place is itself confined to a mere storybook."
Location
Mafeo resides in Grit Gate's "trade square", a room to the right of Grit Gate's main entrance, which can be accessed even if the player has not yet completed A Canticle for Barathrum or A Signal in the Noise.
Wares
Mafeo generally carries a variety of wares, notably stocking a large amount of ammunition, and will restock periodically.[2][3] Additionally, he can identify and repair artifacts in exchange for drams.

Combat
Mafeo will begin neutral to the player but will become hostile if the player attacks him or any Barathrumites within view of him. He can also become hostile if the player's reputation with the Barathrumites falls low enough, or if the player is seen stealing their belongings or damaging their property.
Equipment
Mafeo will always come equipped with a laser pistol, slotted with a
chem cell at 100% charge. He will never list this item if the player trades with him.[4]
Skills
Mafeo possesses the Steady Hand skill, which will increase his accuracy when firing his laser pistol.[4]
Mutations
Being an urshiib, Mafeo possesses the Albino (D) mutation, the
Quills mutation at level 6, and the
Triple-jointed mutation at level 3.[4] Quills provides Mafeo with damage reflection, immunity to the quills of other creatures, and the "Quill Fling" activated ability, which allows Mafeo to fire a portion of his quills to deal damage to adjacent creatures. He will also possess
quills, natural equipment worn on his body that can't be removed, providing him with an additional 4 AV. Triple-jointed will grant Mafeo an additional 3 Agility.
Self Preservation
If Mafeo's hitpoints fall below 45% of his maximum, he will cease combat and will begin to actively flee from threats.[5]

Tips
- Mafeo is usually the very first vendor that sells many lead slugs the player will meet. This is generally when ammo no longer is a scarce resource, so plan weapons accordingly.
- If the
pickaxe from the
waterlogged tunnel was missed, one can be bought at a very cheap price from Mafeo. This pickaxe can then be used to dig further in to Grit Gate to water ritual
Q Girl and gain access to the other two restocking merchants,
Sparafucile and
Jacobo, though this can compromise the defenses for A Call to Arms if one is overzealous in their digging.
