She's an opal in the monochrome.
Her hair is a quasar of red ochre and indigo in the blanched light of the workshop. Her cartilage is pierced by polyhedral rings that spin in antinomy to the cave's simple geometry. Beneath the quills her skin is decorated in furcate lines, fantastic elaborations on the patterns of discarded circuitboards. She's surrounded by apparatuses of her own creation. Through the harmony of those machines, she cuts a swath through the entropic brine that sizzles around her in a loudening chorus.
Q Girl is a legendary member of the Barathrumites located within Grit Gate.[1] She prefers to hang out in the center hub near several gadgets.
Character
Q Girl is a cheerful, energetic Barathrumite. Her favorite word to say is "quetzal", which she says when she wants to express a feeling similar to the one she feels when seeing a bird of the same name. True to her description, she is brightly colored compared to the rest of the Barathrumites who are mostly white and brown. Based on her unique faction relationship reasons, some factions dislike her for that exact appearance.
She is talented in the field of technology as well as philosophy. Along with creating blueprints and instructions for the main story, she also invented the Barathrum clock with Q Girl pendulum which can be found randomly across Qud. She has also penned two books that can be found in game: Disquisition on the Malady of the Mimic and From Entropy to Hierarchy, the latter being a reason why a faction can hate her. A canonical example of this is written about in Council at Gamma Rock. Her teachings in 'From Entropy to Hierarchy' influenced twelve wardens to form the Quetzal Caucus. Other wardens were hostile to their proposal and called the ideas of the Caucus and Q Girl "traitorous chattel".
Barathrum the Old names Q Girl as his "protégé". Hortensa says of her: "She explodes like gas and dust in a quiet corner of the galaxy. Radiant. Revolutionary. She's a good listener and companion for supper, which you mightn't expect." Hortensa also mentions that Q Girl was responsible for Ereshkigal's creation, or at least her activation, which occurred when she "succeeded at retreading the mainframe's guts".
Wares
Q Girl is notable for selling several gemstones, as well as a special variant of the cybernetics credit wedge 1¢ that is significantly cheaper than normal. She does not restock.[2]
Item | Quantity |
---|---|
cybernetics credit wedge 1¢ | 1 |
rough agate gemstone | 0-1 |
rough jasper gemstone | 0-1 |
rough amethyst gemstone | 0-1 |
rough sapphire gemstone | 0-1 |
rough emerald gemstone | 0-1 |
Combat
Q Girl will begin neutral to the player but will become hostile if the player attacks her or any Barathrumites within view of her. She can also become hostile if the player's reputation with the Barathrumites falls low enough, or if the player is seen stealing their belongings or damaging their property.
Life Loop
Q Girl will always come equipped with a life loop, a special item which only she and Otho possess. The life loop is a piece of equipment worn on the arm, granting its wearer no bonuses. The life loop will be permanently equipped on Q Girl's arm (usually her right arm) and cannot be removed, short of extraordinary measures like making her consume the Cloaca Surprise; additionally, it will make the arm it is equipped on immune to dismemberment. The loop will always be slotted with a chem cell at 100% charge, though it does not require power to function.
The life loop will cause Q Girl to teleport to Barathrum's Study and be healed to full health when her hitpoints reach 0, rather than dying. This will not consume the life loop, meaning it is essentially impossible for Q Girl to die so long as she is wearing the loop.[3][2] This is intended to prevent the main quest from soft locking since she is required to be alive for several quests and has the chance of dying during A Call to Arms.
Equipment
Q Girl will always come equipped with 2 overloaded laser pistols, slotted with chem cells at 100% charge. She will never list these items if the player trades with her. She will also come equipped with a powered exoskeleton and a pair of ulnar stimulators, slotted with chem cells at 100% charge, in addition to some polyhedral rings and a pair of plastifer sneakers.[2]
Skills
Q Girl possesses the Akimbo and Steady Hand skills, which will allow her to fire 2 simultaneous shots while wielding her laser pistols, as well as increasing her accuracy when firing them, respectively.[2]
Mutations
Being an urshiib, Q Girl possesses the Albino (D) mutation, the Quills mutation at level 6, and the Triple-jointed mutation at level 3.[2] Quills provides Q Girl with damage reflection, immunity to the quills of other creatures, and the "Quill Fling" activated ability, which allows Q Girl to fire a portion of her quills to deal damage to adjacent creatures. She will also possess quills, natural equipment worn on her body that can't be removed, providing her with an additional 4 AV. Triple-jointed will grant Q Girl an additional 3 Agility.
Self Preservation
If Q Girl's hitpoints fall below 30% of her maximum, she will cease combat and will begin to actively flee from threats.[4]
Properties
Aside from being loved by Barathrumites, Q Girl will always be liked/loved, disliked, and hated by 3 random factions for the following reasons:[2]
- like/loved for developing a quantum mechanical model
- disliked for her queer appearance
- hated for questioning the legitimacy of their hierarchies
If the player speaks to Q Girl and chooses to compliment her hair, they will earn the That Was Nice achievement. The player is unable to do this if they have monochrome.[5]
Water Ritual
When water ritualed, Q Girl can teach the base Tinkering skill, up to three random blueprints, and the recipe for The Porridge. She cannot be asked to join the player as a companion via the water ritual.[2]
Conversations
- Subpage: Q Girl/Conversations
Tips
- The gemstones are good to trade for because at the point the player will most likely meet her (after More Than a Willing Spirit), the gemstones will be the most efficient value/weight item the player will have. They are also trade goods, so the value will always be the same.
