Otho

He stands with tremendous import and stillness, as if upon some hidden but vital vertex of the enclave.

In Barathrum's name, he's conferred onto himself the tonsure of stewardship and shorn the hair from his scalp. His snout narrows in proportion to the tight corridors around him. His robe is impeccably clean. Waydroids beep and whir at him obediently as they scuffle past.

Perfect

Otho is a legendary member of the Barathrumites and an inhabitant of Grit Gate.[1] He is the player's primary liaison for quests after the player gains access to the interior of Grit Gate by completing More Than a Willing Spirit.

Character

Otho is Barathrum the Old's second-in-command and serves as his steward, presiding over the halls of Grit Gate. In accordance with his status, Otho is said to be very tidy and clean, and has "shorn the hair from his scalp". It can be inferred that he is strict, as Neek mentions "sneaking" past Otho's office, and Otho "shushing" them when they make too much noise.

Hortensa says of Otho: "Brassy. If you bent him he might snap. The way I treat liquids on my burner, Otho treats the units of the enclave."

Location

Otho resides in Grit Gate in his office, located immediately to the left of Grit Gate's main entrance. The player will not be permitted to enter Grit Gate to speak with Otho until they complete More Than a Willing Spirit. While it is possible to enter Grit Gate before completing this quest, Otho will only have a single dialogue option and will not give the player any quests until they complete More Than a Willing Spirit.

Quests

Otho is the first main questgiver for quests relating to the main story. He gives the following quests, which begin after completing More Than a Willing Spirit and are successive: Decoding the Signal, The Earl of Omonporch, Grave Thoughts (which then leads into A Call to Arms), and The Assessment. After The Assessment, Barathrum the Old replaces Otho as the primary questgiver for the main story quests.

Combat

Otho will begin neutral to the player but will become hostile if the player attacks him or any Barathrumites within view of him. He can also become hostile if the player's reputation with the Barathrumites falls low enough, or if the player is seen stealing their belongings or damaging their property.

Life Loop

Otho will always come equipped with a life loop, a special item which only he and Q Girl possess. The life loop is a piece of equipment worn on the arm, granting its wearer no bonuses. The life loop will be permanently equipped on Otho's arm (usually his right arm) and cannot be removed, short of extraordinary measures like making him consume the Cloaca Surprise; additionally, it will make the arm it is equipped on immune to dismemberment. The loop will always be slotted with a chem cell at 100% charge, though it does not require power to function.

The life loop will cause Otho to teleport to Barathrum's Study and be healed to full health when his hitpoints reach 0, rather than dying. This will not consume the life loop, meaning it is essentially impossible for Otho to die so long as he is wearing the loop.[2][3]

Equipment

Otho always comes equipped with a chrome revolver and 60-100 lead slugs. He also wears an umber frock.[3]

Skills

Otho possesses the Steady Hand skill, which will increase his accuracy when firing his borderlands pistol.[3]

Mutations

Being an urshiib, Otho possesses the Albino (D) mutation, the Quills mutation at level 6, and the Triple-jointed mutation at level 3.[3] Quills provides Otho with damage reflection, immunity to the quills of other creatures, and the "Quill Fling" activated ability, which allows Otho to fire a portion of his quills to deal damage to adjacent creatures. He will also possess quills, natural equipment worn on his body that can't be removed, providing him with an additional ♦4 AV. Triple-jointed will grant Otho an additional 3 Agility.

Self Preservation

If Otho's hitpoints fall below 50% of his maximum, he will cease combat and will begin to actively flee from threats.[4]

Properties

Otho will always be disliked by three random factions, due to "refusing them entrance to Grit Gate".[3]

Water Ritual

If the player performs the water ritual with Otho and has sufficient reputation with the Barathrumites, he can teach them the Tinkering skill. He can also teach the player how to craft a random blueprint and the recipe for The Porridge, and can trade secrets with the player. However, he cannot be recruited as a companion in this way.[3]

Trivia

Caution: This article or section contains unverified speculation and should not be considered canonical.
  • Otho[5] was a Roman emperor, the second in the Year of the Four Emperors. His reign lasted for three months. Biographer Suetonius said of him: "Moreover, they say that he used to shave every day and smear his face with moist bread, beginning the practice with the appearance of the first down, so as never to have a beard." His father,[6] also an Otho, was known for the severity of his command. The senior Otho earned patrician status by foiling an attempt on the life of the emperor Claudius, who called him "a man of greater loyalty than I can even pray for in my own children."
