A Signal in the Noise is an important step in the main questline when the player chooses a random village start. For the equivalent quest with the same objective available from 
Argyve in 
Joppa, see A Canticle for Barathrum.
In a random village start, there are typically two quest-givers. Both will give procedurally generated quests as described in Village Quest. One will give a choice of three random rewards on completion, and the other will give a 
recoiler to the village as well as give the player the opportunity to start A Signal in the Noise. Prior to departure, the village questgiver will give the player a 
stamped data disk with the signal encoded. Unlike A Canticle for Barathrum, the player does not receive a 
droid scrambler.
To complete the quest, the player must travel to Grit Gate, enter the Barathrumite enclave underground, and talk with the 
communications panel there where the player will give the Barathrumites the stamped data disk. The Barathrumite enclave is always accessible through a north passageway three strata deep underground.

- Unlike A Canticle for Barathrum from Argyve, the player does not receive a droid scrambler upon accepting A Signal in the Noise. This means that the
waydroids in Grit Gate will be hostile to the player, making the journey down more perilous. Preparation and caution is advised. - However, it is still possible to find a droid scrambler without starting in Joppa. One is guaranteed to be at the ruins of Joppa, along with a
scratched data disk. The scratched data disk is also an alternative way to start More Than a Willing Spirit without needing to start A Signal in the Noise or complete its prerequisite Village Quest. This means both A Signal in the Noise and its prerequisite quest are both optional and don't need to be completed to continue the main questline.
