bionic heart is a moderate cost body exclusive cybernetic implant which grants the user +2 to Toughness
The bonus unlike boosts from equipment and much like the points obtained from leveling count towards the attribute requirements for certain skills. Additionally the extra toughness provides the user with +1 to toughness related saves, a faster natural regeneration rate as well as additional hitpoints both upon installation and while leveling up.
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
- Extra HP generally translates to a higher overall survival rate.
- Toughness relative to the other attributes has a disproportionate number of associated saves which can potentially have severe negative consequences if they are failed, improving the relative utility offered by a +1 to toughness saves. Such dangerous saves include:
- Avoiding becoming afflicted with the mutating effect applied by the
mutating gaze attack employed by
gamma moths.
- Avoiding the instant death that often results from being struck by the
Lithifying Gaze attack emitted by
lithofexes.
- Avoiding becoming infected with a disease onset condition and\or having said onset condition advance to a full-fledged illness.
- Avoiding being stunned, oftentimes to death.
- Avoiding the itchy skin effect from standing in the spores
dispersed by broodpuffs.
- Avoiding becoming afflicted with the mutating effect applied by the
Disadvantages
- Additional HP can become less relevant as the user advances in levels and capabilities.
- Can be fully replaced by injecting two
Eaters' nectar injectors and boosting toughness, freeing up the highly competitive bodyslot for an implant with effects that cannot be as easily replicated, such as
equipment rack,
magnetic core,
high-fidelity matter recompositer or
stasis entangler.
- Moderate cost can be a bit prohibitive depending on the user's license tier and build goals.
HP Calculations
HP gained upon leveling up is governed by the equation: 1d4 + Toughness Modifier.
In order to better illustrate the difference, the following table tracks the relative health totals (assuming a uniform roll of 2.5) from levels 5-90 of a 16-toughness character with and without an installed bionic heart.
Level | HP at 16 Tou | HP at 18 Tou | Relative increase |
---|---|---|---|
5 | 28 | 34 | 21.43% |
10 | 41 | 52 | 26.83% |
15 | 53 | 69 | 30.19% |
20 | 66 | 87 | 31.82% |
25 | 78 | 104 | 33.33% |

Tips
- Having the implant installed effectively provides the user with 6 levels worth of attribute points spent on toughness. Accumulating skill points before implanting will allow the player to buy skills with higher toughness requirements than they would otherwise have, without the permanent ability point investment. The player can expedite the process of finding a bionic heart to this end, by finding a way to move the statically spawned
gutsmonger from the
Six Day Stilt to an appropriately tiered zone, such as
Ezra, to take advantage of their dynamically tiered stock table.
