Cats are a faction in Caves of Qud that start hostile towards the player character. However, there are more docile cats, like Ctesiphus. Cats are also one of the few factions that can be pet, if you have high enough reputation with them. Otherwise, they will shy away from the player.

In the early game, having negative reputation does not cause harm since the only cats the player will usually see are the docile ray cat. However, upon reaching the jungles and deep underground, the more dangerous faction members will appear more frequently.
