    Arachnids

    Arachnids1 are a faction consisting of spiders, scorpions, ticks, and the arachnid-like spawn of the Girsh. All factions which inherit from the Beasts faction are neutral towards arachnids.

    Having the Spinnerets mutation grants +300 reputation with arachnids, while having one of the three variants of Stinger mutation grants +200 reputation with arachnids. The Skill taught by legendary arachnids, Lunge, is utilized by all stingers.

    Encounters

    A cluster of arachnids, led by a legendary arachnid with the title of virtuoso weaver, are a possible dynamic encounter.[1] The inventory of a virtuoso weaver may include  scarlet shawls,  vine-weave tunics, an  ironweave cloak, a  nanoweave vest, and a  rainboweave cloak.[2] The zone they appear in will be covered with  webs and the scattered corpses of insects.[3]

    Notably,  girshlings are not excluded from leading an arachnid encounter.

    Combat Overview

    Non-Girsh arachnids are generally themed around restricting or otherwise controlling the movement of their target, both for offensive and defensive purposes. Aside from weaving  webs to trap prey in, arachnids may also inflict paralysis, teleport a target within melee range, or avoid damage via phase mismatch.

    All arachnids[4] will prioritize attacking a non-allied creature who is stuck,[5] often after the creature moved into a tile containing a  web or  phase web.  Cave spiders and  voiders try to keep their distance from creatures who aren't stuck.[6] All creatures with either the  Spider Webs or  Spinnerets mutation are immune to the stuck effect.

    In melee, arachnids use a natural weapon on their face, typically a short blade often called fangs.  Scorpiocks and all varieties of  girshling have multiple natural weapons.

    Culture

    Arachnids weave. All legendary arachnids hold the title of virtuoso weaver, but only those found in dynamic encounters carry a stock of woven equipment. It is unclear whether they are interested in the lairs of human  haberdashers out of admiration or rivalry. Arachnid villages are founded on the principles of graph theory.

    • A zone encounter with arachnids is often an opportunity to obtain a  rainboweave cloak and/or a  nanoweave vest at a much earlier point in a run than usual.
      • If the virtuoso weaver has equipped the desired armor, and if the player does not want the reputation changes they would receive from killing it, they can instead recruit it and lead it to its death. The low Mental Armor of arachnids allows them to become beguiled or proselytized to with relative ease.
