    Naphtaali

The Naphtaali tribe are a religious faction comprised of tight-knit groups of woodsprogs and the robotic godheds they construct. Each Naphtaali dedicates themselves to their community and their role, whether it's to build and refine their godhed or to defend their people from goatfolk and intruding adventurers.

While the Naphtaali tribe primarily inhabits the jungle and may own lairs there[1], groups of Naphtaali can also be found in the flower fields.

Planished godheds are the faction's only members who can teach the Tactful skill during the Water Ritual. Godheds are also members of the Robots faction, meaning destroying or bonding with a legendary planished godhed will adjust reputation with robots accordingly.

    Culture and Beliefs

Members of the Naphtaali tribe congregate to form a minyan, which the ciderer Erah defines as "pilgrims, drawn together by need and awe and inspiration." The roles that the Naphtaali specialize into form a self-sufficient community, whether by defending or feeding the group, or by building and maintaining a godhed.

Unlike the Mechanimists, who see technology itself as divine, the Naphtaali tribe uses tinkering as a means of worship. The descriptions for unplanished godheds explain that they are constructed to "serve as spiritual center mass for a minyan of woodsprogs." Godheds are built to be served by their creators, and they are refined until they embody what they represent to their minyan, thus becoming "planished."

Each member of the tribe wears a decorated mask identical to those worn by the rest of their minyan. Only once a godhed is fully integrated and embraced as part of their community do the woodsprogs affix the mask of their minyan to the godhed's sensory pane. Naphtaali masks exist only textually and cannot be obtained.

The Naphtaali tribe, as well as woodsprogs outside the tribe, apparently have a significant conflict with the goatfolk who also inhabit the jungles of Qud. "Sower's eye pass over you" is an expression of goodwill used both by tribe members and outsiders, and the ciderer Erah says their former minyan was nearly entirely slain in an attack by goatfolk.

    Group Spawning

Spawned groups of Naphtaali tribe members, or "Naphtaali encounters," have three variants. Each encounter has a 70% chance for the group to include an unplanished godhed and a 10% chance to include a planished godhed, who will always be a legendary creature. This leaves a 20% chance to spawn "stragglers," a smaller group with no godhed.

A group of stragglers, aside from lacking a godhed, uses a different table than "complete" minyans, and is instead comprised of the following:

This section is an excerpt from Unplanished godhed#Minyans.

An unplanished godhed or its legendary planished counterpart will always be accompanied by a group comprised of the following:

Planished godheds lead their minyan and will be followed closely by the rest of the group, while unplanished godheds do not lead their minyan, which will spawn spread out instead.

    Tips

This section is opinion-based. Your mileage may vary.

    Diplomacy

    • Performing the Water Ritual with a planished godhed will raise the player character's reputation with both the Naphtaali tribe and the Robots faction. A player seeking a neutral reputation with robots may note that while the Naphtaali tribe's initial player reputation is hostile, its value of -350 is unusually high for an initially hostile faction.
    • Planished godheds may occasionally offer a cybernetics credit wedge 1¢ during the Water Ritual. True Kin are able to Rebuke godheds like any other robot, and if this recruits the godhed in the process, they will willingly give the player character their credit wedge from their inventory for zero cost. Installed communications interlocks make recruitment more likely.

    Combat

    • Like Snapjaws, members of the Naphtaali tribe are swarmers who are relatively fragile compared to other creatures in their Zone Tier. Unlike snapjaws, Naphtaali are specialized into roles with skills which, combined with the dense foliage of jungle zones, make them far more effective at surrounding their target before enough swarm members can be slain individually.
    • All Naphtaali woodsprogs have a self-preservation threshold of 20% of their maximum HP.[2] This, combined with their low maximum HP, means a Naphtaali may survive an apparently lethal hit, disappear into the trees, and then attempt to swarm their target again a few rounds later.

    Trivia

    • In Judaism, a minyan is a group of at least ten eligible adults required for certain religious duties. The condolences the player can give to former Naphtaali Ciderer Erah, "may their memories bless you," are also Judaist in origin. [citation needed]
