bionic liver is a moderate cost cybernetic implant which upon installation grants the user complete immunity to poison damage and protection against all diseases.
The disease protection applies to glotrot, monochrome and ironshank. As long as the implant is installed, the user will be unable to contract any of the three onset conditions or the diseases themselves through the random effect inflicting attack of zero jells or from stepping in dilute
warm static. Additionally, any currently incubating diseases will be prevented from advancing to the next stage, even if the user would have otherwise failed the required Toughness saves. This protection however, does not extend to diseases which have already fully manifested, necessitating that the user seek out traditional means of
treatment.
Despite the similarity to diseases, Fungal infections and their onset condtion are not prevented by bionic liver.
The poison immunity prevents the user from being afflicted with the poisoned status effect, nullifies any direct poison damage and allows the user to freely walk through clouds of poison gas without taking damage or suffering from status effects. In addition, the implant will neutralize the effects of certain poison-based attacks employed by some creatures. Such attacks include: The
paralyzing stinger used by
scorpiocks, the stony effect inflicted by the bite of
molting basilisks and
lithofexes and the venom possessed by
phase spiders.
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
- Prevents the user from randomly contracting diseases from warm static or zero jells, making the Moon Stair marginally less annoying to explore.
- Being immune to poisonous gas grants the user the option of detonating or throwing poison gas grenades as mostly safe blocking/escape tools. Hostile creatures will generally (though not always) attempt to avoid pathing into poisonous gas, allowing the user to walk through the generated gas to safety or stand within the cloud and open fire with minimal risk of retaliation.
- Prevents the user from having the effectiveness of their healing items reduced due to the effects of poison or ill, potentially saving the user from being worn down in a battle of attrition with large numbers of poison-wielding ickslugs or similar foes.
Disadvantages
- Outside of the early game, creatures capable of inflicting poison or spreading diseases are rare, limiting the usefulness of resisting either.
- Moderate cost can be a bit prohibitive depending on the user's license tier and build goals.
- Takes up the highly competitive body slot while only offering a fairly niche albeit situationally powerful bonus.
- The poison immunity can be partially replicated without using a valuable cybernetics slot by equipping one or more Slog's annunclus.
Golgotha considerations
Golgotha relative to other static locations contains an exceptional number of threats which in some fashion employ poison or disease all of which are neutralized by the effects of the implant, noticeably lowering the danger of traversing the dungeon. Such neutralized obstacles include:
- The poison-inflicting attack of green jells
- The disease onset-inflicting attack of black jells
- The potentially applied poison or disease onset conditions from being knocked prone by sewage eels while standing in green goo, black ooze or brown sludge.
- The poison applied by Slog of the Cloaca.
- Potentially acquiring a disease onset condition after inhaling miasma gas.
Tips
Spoiler Warning: This article contains information normally only found in the course of advancing the main quest line. |
- Poison is one of the 7 damage types which comprise the deadly Irisdual Beam ability possessed by the Girsh Nephilim. Having the implant installed will provide an approximate 14% reduction to the damage of the attack, noticeably lowering the overall damage and improving survivability especially when used alongside other sources of elemental resistance such as grounding shunts, dermal insulation or high-energy thermo casks.
- Due to bionic liver granting immunity to the effects of miasma and poison gas, the user has the option of safely using heat-based weapons like flamethrowers or thermal grenades to burn away the large pools of toxic liquid present in Golgotha's cloaca, allowing the user to proceed without as much fear of movement speed penalties from wading or swimming, with the additional benefit of making it easier to evade slog, who otherwise receives a 50 point bonus to movement speed while in liquid.
- If the user is willing to engage with the cooking system, the immunity to poison gas can be exploited by cooking a recipe with regular and concentrated gallbeard gland paste in order to gain access to level 15 Poison Breath. The ability can then be augmented by one or more overloaded gas tumblers in order to output a tremendous amount of long-lasting poisonous gas which can be used as cover or condensed at will with gravity grenades to create a hyper-dense cloud that enemies can be dragged into by using Hook and Drag and potentially instantly killed. The effect can be bolstered further by using Eaters' nectar injectors to boost the user's Willpower to 32, which reduces the cooldown of poison breath to 5 turns and having an installed stasis projector, which with some compute power can be used to create a sealed box that can be safely cooked within, letting the user refresh the effect whenever they desire, even in the middle of combat.
