Quills is a physical mutation that grants the Quills natural equipment, providing the player with natural body armor, melee damage reflection, and the ability to discharge their quills to deal damage around themselves. The total amount of quills the player possesses, how quickly those quills regenerate, their penetration value, and the AV bonus provided by the Quills are determined by the mutation level.
Each time a creature gains a mutation level in Quills, they receive a random bonus to their maximum quills between 80-120. The table below lists the range of possible maximum quill amounts for a given level.

- Provides moderate AV (as long as the player retains at least half of their quills) which scales with mutation level while also having no DV penalty or weight
