Photosynthetic Skin

You replenish yourself by absorbing sunlight through your hearty green skin.

You can bask in the sunlight instead of eating a meal to gain a special metabolizing effect for (level based) days: +(level based)% to natural healing rate and +(level based) Quickness
While in the sunlight, you accrue starch and lignin that you can use as ingredients in meals you cook (max (level based) servings each).
+(level based) DV while occupying the same space as foliage.
+200 reputation with roots, trees, vines, and the Consortium of Phyta

Photosynthetic Skin is a physical mutation that allows the player to derive sustenance from the sun.

Photosynthetic Skin grants the "Bask" activated ability, which when used above ground during the day, will fully replenish the player's hunger and grant a metabolizing effect that boosts the player's natural healing rate and Quickness by mutation level-based amounts. Players with Photosynthetic Skin can still cook on campfires to satisfy their hunger as normal.

When a player with Photosynthetic Skin is low on food, rather than becoming Famished!, they will become Wilted!, reducing their natural healing rate by 10% and their Quickness by 5.

Every 6 hours (or 300 game ticks) under the sky and during the day, a player with Photosynthetic Skin will generate one serving of starch and lignin, up to a maximum amount determined by mutation level. These items are intended to be used when cooking and cannot be used in meals unless the player has the Meal Preparation skill. They will not be present in the inventory and cannot be interacted with in any way except for when cooking. When used in a meal, starch and lignin will grant the Quickness and regeneration bonus of the "Bask" ability, respectively.[1][2][3]

The player will receive a small bonus to their DV if they occupy the same space as foliage (up to a maximum of 6) similar to how vine-weave tunic, leafy vest, grassy yurtmat and leafy helm work.

Creatures with Photosynthetic Skin will bleed sap as well as blood, and will take damage from defoliant.

Formulas

The following formulas are used to determine bask bonus duration (rounded down), regeneration bonus, Quickness bonus, and max starch/lignin servings (rounded down) based on mutation level.[4]

20 + (Level × 10)
Quickness Bonus

Advantages & Disadvantages

This section is opinion-based. Your mileage may vary.

Advantages

  • Grants the same amount of regeneration and quickness as the mutations Regeneration (without the combat regen bonus) and Heightened Quickness for a mere 2 points
  • Gives bonus reputation with roots, trees, vines, and the Consortium of Phyta
  • Creatures occasionally get stuck in your sappy blood, helping you escape after critical hits
  • Good synergy with Adrenal Control: basking while your Photosynthetic Skin level is boosted lets you keep the increased metabolic bonus until you get hungry
  • Grants a small bonus to DV when in foliage

Disadvantages

  • Characters with Photosynthetic Skin take high damage from defoliant
  • Basking is only possible during the day and above ground
  • Basking bonuses are considered cooking effects and are split into 2 ingredients, so it can be hard to use both quickness and healing bonuses alongside other cooking effects
  • You occasionally get stuck in your sappy blood, making it harder to get away after critical hits
  • Sappy blood can not be used to fuel biodynamic cells
  • The DV bonus can be hard to utilize in areas with spare vegetation, unless using Burgeoning or deploying a plastic tree
